Round About
Holland House is centrally located in the West
Mainland, making it the ideal base for your holiday.
Close to Holland House are:
Skara Brae - a Neolithic
Village offering a glimpse into Neolithic life, only
recently uncovered after being buried during a Sand
Storm 5,200 years ago.
Maeshowe - a Neolithic Tomb
which was broken into by Vikings. Houses the best examples
of Runic writing in Europe.
The Ring of Brodgar - a Neolithic
Circle of 36 Stones set between two lochs.
The Harray Loch - one of
the UK’s leading brown trout fishing waters. Also
close-by are the Stenness & Boardhouse Lochs, making
Holland House ideal for fishermen seeking long summer
nights by the water.
The Standing Stones of Stenness
– A small circle of massive stones dating
from the third millenium BC.
Corrigal Farm Museum –
a glimpse into life in the past with a recreation of
a mid-19th century Orkney farm. A must for animal lovers!
The Brough of Birsay –
a tidal island accessed by causeway when the tide is
low. There is a monastry and several Norse longhouses
to see there.
The Broch of Gurness –
the ruins of an Iron Age Fortress and settlement.
The Round Kirk - Scotland's
only circular mediaeval church, dating from the early
12th century.
The historic and picturesque towns of Kirkwall and
Stromness are only 15 minutes by car and both towns
have delightful gift shops selling designer jewellery,
knitwear and crafts all produced on the Islands.
There are also many craft shops scattered throughout
the countryside which are well worth a visit –
especially well worth a visit are Fursbreck Pottery
for a unique gift, Belgarth Bodhrans for handmade beautifully
decorated drums and the Yellowbird Gallery for its lovely
bird carvings!
Also check our events calendar to the right –
there is plenty going on throughout the year in Orkney,
with Festivals, Agricultural Shows, Ceilidhs, Fishing
Competitions and Music nights in the local pubs.
Walking is a favourite activity for many visitors to
Orkney and Harray is an excellent location to enjoy
varied and safe country walks with breathtaking scenery

Birdwatching is very popular on the islands and with
